Safar 1448 AH Begins on July 16, 2026

The first day of Safar 1448 AH will fall on July 16, 2026 (CE), following the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal) on the evening of July 15. As a result, the month of Muharram concluded with 30 days.

Reliable reports of the hilal were received from multiple locations, including Las Vegas, Nevada, confirming the beginning of the new lunar month. However, sighting conditions varied significantly across the United States. In several northeastern states, including New Jersey and New York, observation efforts were hindered by dense smoke in the atmosphere. The smoke, originating from ongoing Canadian wildfires, reduced visibility and made crescent moon sightings particularly challenging.

These monthly announcements serve a dual purpose. First, they seek to increase awareness and appreciation of the Hijri calendar among the Muslim community in America. Second, they provide a historical record of events surrounding lunar observations, preserving details that may be of value to future generations.

Throughout history, individuals have documented the political, geographical, environmental, and social conditions of their times, leaving behind records that offer important insights into the lives and experiences of past generations. It is hoped that these monthly reports will similarly contribute to the historical record, providing future readers with a glimpse into the circumstances and events that shaped our era.
