All praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, the Lord of the hilal (the new moon) and the Lord of humanity. Blessings and peace be upon our leader and beloved Muhammad the seal of the Prophets and Imam of the Messengers and upon his family and companions the same.
Today, 02 December, 2024 corresponds with the 30th of Jumada Al Awwal. Therefore, tonight Muslims across the world will be gathering to look for the new moon of Jumada Ath-Thani. Astronomically, the new moon was born on 01 December, 2024. Tonight the luminosity of the moon should reach 2.5% . The month of Jumada Al Awwal will be completed with 30 days and the new month will begin on 03 December, 2024.
Let us make an effort to look towards the western sky tonight. Perhaps you will sight the new moon. If you decide to participate in this Islamic tradition of sighting the new moon, please return to The House of Green Islamic Foundation website to submit your findings on our Astronomy Log page. Let us take our place with the rest of the Muslim world and submit our reports of the signs of Allah that we use to determine our months and years. Allah says,
They ask you concerning the new moon. Say: They are times appointed for (the benefit of) men, and (for) the pilgrimage; and it is not righteousness that you should enter the houses at their backs, but righteousness is this that one should guard (against evil); and go into the houses by their doors and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, that you may be successful.
May Allah bless us to seek and find the benefit in searching for the hilal and may He bless us to remember Him day in and day out as we draw closer to the sacred months, to Ramadan and ultimately to the last hour.
BiSalaam,
Lavon Brown
